Positioned gracefully across the Book of Psalms is a string of seventy-one pearls, lovely beads of wisdom followed by the admonition SELAH. Most scholars believe SELAH is a musical notation which in Hebrew might have meant, “Pause. . . think on these things ... meditate.” Though every verse in the Bible is God-breathed and deserving of prayerful consideration, we are instructed seventy-one times in the Book of Psalms to pay particular attention to what has just been said. Why? It’s a pearl of great price! Throughout the ages pearls have been valued for their purity and perfection and are often worn on “state occasions.” Joined together by the Word of God, the seventy-one Selah pearls create an exquisite necklace of the purest quality. However, these Selah pearls are not reserved for ceremonial use. They are available, each and every day, for our personal blessing and pleasure. On the following pages, you will find Selah pearls, each one followed by a meditation. I hope you will pause, think on these things, and be blessed as you meditate on God’s precious pearls.
